Needham was the son of Needham Bryan II and Nancy Smith. In 1768 in Johnston County, North Carolina, he married Sarah Ann Hinton. They had the following children: Loverd, Edna, Benjamin, Clement, Redla, William, Sarah, Larry, Philemon, and Lewis. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Needham was commissioned a captain in the Johnston County militia.
