Death: Nov. 30, 1952

Nurse and therapist. With no formal training as a nurse, she became one of Australia's most famous therapists and helped thousands of people around the world. During World War I, she volunteered as a nurse, and although she wasn't fully qualified, nurse numbers were scarce and she was accepted. She served for approximately four years, during which time she was promoted to sister, a title that she cherished jealously for the rest of her life. She discovered a revolutionary treatment for infantile paralysis and devoted her life to the dissemination of the treatment throughout the United States and abroad. In 1946 her story was dramatized in the film "Sister Kenny", starring Rosalind Russell, who had become her close friend. The film was based on Martha Ostenso's biography of Kenny, "And they Shall Walk". She and her followers treated millions of polio victims across the world. During the final years of her life before she retired in 1951, she made journeys throughout America, Europe and Australia in final effort for her methods to be accepted. She was a charitable, persistent, self-less woman who devoted her life to helping others. Her most enduring legacy is the Minneapolis Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. She became an inspirational figure in Australian history. She returned home to Toowoomba in 1951 where she died of complications from Parkinson's disease and was buried beside her mother in Nobby cemetery; a small museum in Nobby holds artifacts and documents relating to her life.
