Death: Dec. 9, 1915
Linn County
Oregon, USA

Charles Marion Burkhart was the 2nd child and 1st son to be born to Coriolanus Domaras "Crill" (1821-1881) and Caroline Lavinia {Goff} (1835-1892) Burkhart who had emigrated to Oregon in 1847 with other members of Crill's family, one of three families to settle the town of Albany, Linn County, Oregon. Crill and Caroline chose to settle on 640 acres of land S. of Albany, near what became Harrisburg, Linn County. Thirteen children would be borne from their union, however, not all would live to adulthood and not all would marry. Charles Marion was born on Aug 18, 1853. He attended school and chose to be a farmer as he loved working the land in the area where he had been raised. Charlie married Mary Ellen Morgan in Oct., 1874 in Linn Co., OR. They settled in Monmouth, Polk County, OR., on a farm they owned by the time the 1880 Census was taken on Jun 16, 1880. In 1900, Mary Ellen and her children had resettled to West Albany, Linn County, OR. Their daughters were now 22 yrs., (Carolean Pleassa), and 20 yrs. of age (Emma). Mary was now 43 yrs. old. She stated she was married on the census although Charles wasn't listed in the home when the enumerator was there to take the information. In 1910, Charles, now 57, and Mary Ellen, now 54, were farming in the West Albany area. Pleassa had married James Edwin Foster in 1901 and they were living in the Albany, Oregon, area on a farm, carrying on the tradition. The Fosters would go on to have four children of their own. Emma never married, but continued to live in the family home, assisting her parents who were growing older as the years passed. Charles Marion was diagnosed with a brain tumor (most likely the cause of blinding headaches) and hired Ivan Tennant to help out on the farm. He helped when Charles was feeling ill, which became more and more frequent, until Charles died on Dec 5th, 1915. Charles was buried with other family members in the Riverside Cemetery in Albany. Mary Ellen was devastated by his loss and never remarried. Ivan Tennant signed an agreement with the widow, Mary Ellen, rather like a life estate, in which Ivan could continue to work and live on the land until both Mary Ellen and her children passed away; then the farm would be his, but not before they had died. Ivan was apparently a good man of his word for he stayed on their farm with the widow and the daughter of Charles Marion Burkhart, caring for the property and planting, then harvesting the crops to bring in money, until both mother and daughter passed. Mary Ellen finally joined her beloved husband in Heaven on June 7th, 1948. She was buried next to her dear husband in Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn Co., OR. Emma Olive joined her parents after spending many years as owner of her own millinery shop in Albany; she passed away on Dec 30th, 1960. Pleassa Caroline (Burkhart) Foster had married her husband, James Edwin Foster, and they had been blessed with three children. Upon her demise she was interred, in 1952, w/him at Riverside Cemetery. He had died in 1948 (from heart failure) and had been buried near their daughter, Eva Ellen, who had died in 1915 from a burst appendix, and son, Charles Robert, who had died in 1941 (from, coincidentally, a Brain Tumor). May they all Rest in Peace.

Rest well in Paradise. I know Oregon was pretty close to it sometimes, but now you are in Heaven with God's fields of Gold with all who have gone before you. With Affection,
