Mrs. M. J. Carroll, 84 years of age, died Sunday afternoon following an illness of several days at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. M. Wicker. In the death of Mrs. Carroll, Houston lost another of her mothers of the old school, and one dearly beloved. She was born and reared in Montpelier, coming to Houston to reside ten years ago, almost to a day. In her teens she united with the Baptist Church at Pine Bluff. She was married Jan. 17, 1873 to Mr. J. M. Carroll, whose death occurred a number of years ago. Through her life she was gentle and loving, a neighbor who went about doing good. In the latter years when her ill heath prevented her getting out she was ever busy with fancy work, making it to give joy to others. She was only confined to her bed a few days, complications having set it. The funeral was held Monday morning at ten o'clock at Palestine, the old old family cemetery, the Rev. W. C. Stewart, pastor of the Houston Baptist Church, officiating. A male quartette composed of Messrs., J. A. Paden, Aaron Harrington, Jesse Alford, and Odie Trenor rendered favorite selections. The active pallbears were her grandsons, Malcolm, James, Terry, Wendell, Holcomb, Frank B. Carroll Jr., and W. E. Moseley. Honorary pallbearers were Messrs. Jim Blair, Cleve Doss, W. E. Scott Sr., J. S. Hickman, and John A. Wilkinson.
Mrs. Carroll is survived by one daughter, and four sons, Mrs. W. M. Wicker and T. W. Carroll, of Houston; J. E. and C. E. Carroll, of Montpelier, and F. B. Carroll, of Memphis, Tenn.: also by four sisters, Mrs. M. C. McGee, and Mrs. Asenath George of Mantee; Mrs. Rhoda Murray, and a brother, Mr. P. B. Cliett, of Pheba, Miss.
