|Death: ||Jan. 7, 1667|
New Haven County
The son of RYCHARD & ALICE CHERRYE MYLES, he was baptized in Great Munden, Hertforshire, England on Aug. 27, 1598.
It is believed that he came with company led by Rev. Peter Prudden from Hertfordshire, England, arriving in Boston on July 26, 1637. They sailed from Boston to New Haven Colony around 1638 and established a settlement in Wepawaug (Milford). He was a free planter. See the picture to the right of his name on a memorial on the Founder's Bridge over the Wepawaug River in Milford.
Around 1641, he removed from Milford to New Haven. His lot in New Haven was on College Street.
Richard became a freeman in 1639, was appointed judge in New Milford in 1640, was administered the Oathe of Fidelity by Gov. Theophilus Eaton July l, 1644, appointed clerk to the New Haven Artillary Company in 1648, a deacon of the First Church in New Haven 1656-67, and performed may jobs for Colony as appointed by the Court such as highway & fence surveyor & arbitrator of disputes. He worked on the first sea-going ship from New Haven, the Phantom Ship, which sank on it's first voyage when many of New Haven's finest died, including my ancestor THOMAS GREGSON.
His first wife/wives are unknown, but she was probably the mother of Martha, Mary, Richard and Samuel.
He married Mary Catherine Elithorpe around 1641-1642 in New Haven, Conn. and she was possibly the mother of Hannah & my ancestor, CAPT. JOHN MILES.
His will of Dec. 28, 1666 names wife, Catherine, eldest son, Richard, and the other children with no names given.
