Birth: Aug. 12, 1823
County Limerick, Ireland
Death: Mar. 14, 1864

District Of Columbia, USA

James was a soldier in England, fighting in the Crimean War. He immigrated to America in 1856 and worked as a tailor. However, he soon joined the United States Army as indicated in this transcript of his first enlistment. #76 O'Brien, James H., Limerick, Ireland, 31, Tailor, Sept 9, 1856, Boston, Leut. Ropell, 5 year, Blue, Light Brown, Fair, 5 foot 6 1/2 inches, 4 Art. C. A. 10 Inf. E, 9 Jul 1861, by reenlistment, ? remarks not legible, may mention he had family with him. He fought in the Florida Wars, and then was sent west to Camp Floyd in Utah where he met and married Jane Hacking (King King McNeil O'Brien). She had a son David Franklin King, and daughter Josephine McNeil (who died as an infant) with previous husbands. James and Jane had a daughter Mary Jane and a son James Hanley O'Brien.

After Mary was born, the Civil War began, so James reenlisted and was sent east, and Jane and her children went with him. James was wounded on the battlefield and while he was recovering, Jane gave birth to Junior. Alas, her husband only lived 2 1/2 months after the birth of his son.

The location given for James Hanley O'Brien's burial is from some old family records that say he was buried in Arlington, Washington, D.C. and since I have not found which is correct--Arlington or Washington, D.C., I will leave that as is, but with this explanation. I have not found an on-line resource that has the correct information, but I am still searching. I am hoping eventually to gain access to his military records -- I am awaiting the right forms. Perhaps it will include which cemetery he was buried.
