In 1874, he was apponted by General William Bolton asLieutenant Colonel and Adjutant General of the Second Division N. G. P. He was the originator of Co. A of Pottstown and mustered in the company in 1877. He had a varied career of many occupations, among them hotel keeper and traveling salesman, and also served the public as County Clerk of Courts and later as Justice of Peace. The cause of his death was complications caused by ailments of the liver. He is buried in the family plot in Pottstown East.
