Sgt. 1st Class Matthew L. Hilton of Livonia, Michigan graduated from Holt High School in 1989 and had worked with the Lathrup Village Police Department since 2001 and, before that, with the Detroit Police Department. He had been a reservist for 18 years. He served in Iraq in 2005 and volunteered for this most recent mission to Afghanistan, which began in January. His wife, Mary is also in the National Guard and had just returned in May 2008 from a tour in Iraq. He died from wounds suffered June 26 near Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, when his convoy encountered improvised explosive devices, small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. He was 37. Matthew was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge for their service in Afghanistan.
