Eldest daughter and eldest of twelve children of Roger de Mortimer and Joan de Geneville. Her paternal grandparents were Edmund Mortimer, 2nd Baron Mortimer and Margaret de Fiennes. Her maternal grandparents were Piers de Geneville, of Trim Castle and Ludlow, and Jeanne of Lusignan. Wife of Thomas de Berkeley, married May 1319, and mother of Maurice, Thomas, Roger, Alphonsus and Joan.
Her marriage to Thomas de Berkeley ("Thomas the Rich") was arranged specifically to connect their family with an important Marcher Lord family. After her father's fall from grace involving the removal of Edward II from the throne, Margaret was arrested and jailed in 1322, then sent to Sholdham Priory in 1324. Margaret's eldest son, Maurice Lord Berkeley, would marry Elizabeth le Despenser, whose father was brutally and publicly executed by none other than Margaret's father.
