Daughter of George Armstrong and Elizabeth Bostedo Wauchope, wife of Robert Duncan Bass.

Virginia met her husband at the University of South Carolina when they were both freshmen. At the time, she was living on campus in the house she had been born in. Her father had been head of the Department of English for many years. Virginia and Robert were married on May 25, 1929 in the second floor front parlor of her home, which is now the President's home.

She and Robert were both writers. Virginia authored three anthologies and a work of fiction. The Robert and Virginia Bass Library and Research Center at the Marion Museum was named in honor of Virginia and her husband.


MARION - Virginia Wauchope Bass, 93, an author, died Tuesday in a Bryan, Texas nursing home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Old Neck Cemetery in Brittons Neck. Burial will be directed by Smith Collins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bass was born in Columbia, a daughter of George A. Wauchope and Elizabeth Bostedo Wauchope. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. She was the widow of Dr. Robert Duncan Bass.

Surviving are two sons, George F. Bass of College Station, Texas, and Robert W. Bass of Lexington Park, Md.; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.
