Despite the inscribed birthdate on this tombstone of 25 Dec 1796, this is the tombstone of Charles Briggs SR., located about 20 feet from his son's grave, Charles JR. Apparently, the tombstone's birthdate inscription is a misnomer, likely because his descendants who erected it after his death were unaware of Charles' birthdate accuracy. In this vein it's just as possible Charles Sr. was born 25 Dec 1807. All censuses for Charles (England 1841, Iowa 1860 & Iowa 1870) indicates he was bca. 1806 to April 1808, with his recorded baptismal date being April 10, 1808. In 1850, Charles with his family, were immigrating to the United States.
