Leonard was the last of the three children born to Conrad and Anna (Stejskal) Most. His father died when he was not-quite seven years old. A sister, Wilma, had died in 1916 shortly before her first birthday. Following the death of his father, his mother took her two sons to live with her parents, Frank and Anna Stejskal. She met Elijah Lorenzo Chaney, and they married in December, 1920. They mvoed to Clay County and then to Hamilton County, Nebraska. So Elizah Chaneyraised Leonard and his brother Louis; he and Anna had two children, Erma and Albert with whom Leonard grew up as well.
