George was originally buried on his plantation called the "Retreat". During the Civil War he and his families bodies were vandalized by the Yankees searching for valuables. All of the family was later reburied at Magnolia cemetery. He died in a stagecoach accident in Staunton, Virginia while on his way to to the Springs in Virginia to regain his health. Family records show he died on August 31, 1837 which differs from the headstone, however due to the re-internment at Magnolia the headstone may or may not be correct.

He also had another son William Edings Chisolm who was born on December 30, 1823 and died at College Point, Long Island, New York on November 13, 1895. He married Mary Ann Rogers on February 23, 1848 and she died on May 21, 1913. She was eighty six years old. His burial location is unknown. He left two sons George E. Chisolm of Morristown, New York and B. Ogden Chisolm of New York City. He also had one daughter, Mary Fredericka Chisolm Schieffelin.
