Having fought the good fight, finishing the race, and keeping the faith, REVEREND JOHN R. BLUE, age 79, lost his battle with prostate cancer on Sunday, June 8, 2008.

Survivors include his wife, Linda L. Blue; daughter, Sarah Ann Phillips; son-in-law, Todd; sons, John Mark, Stephen Hayes, and James Gilbert Blue; daughters-in-law, Anne and Suzie Blue; grandchildren, Andrew Peterson, Stephen Todd, Caleb Thomas, and Josuha David Phillips, Elizabeth Parker, John Dixon, and Colby Anne Blue, Jason and Ashley Blue; sister, Mary Anna Johnson; brother-in-law, Richard; brothers, Kenneth and Donald Blue, sisters-in-law, Rosemary and Linda Blue; other relatives; and many, many good friends.

Reverend Blue, was preceded in death by his father, Harry, Sr.; mother, Idawilla; older brothers, Harry, Jr. and William; and sister-in-law, Bernice.

After being Honorably Discharged from the Army in April 1947, Reverend Blue enrolled in the University of Missouri, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture on June 5, 1952. He enrolled in Divinity School at Duke University, receiving a Master of Divinity Degree on June 4, 1956.

He served as a United Methodist Church preacher for 11 1/2 years. In the summer of 1968, he completed a six week orientation program certifying him as an accredited Veterans Administration Medical Center chaplain. He served in this capacity until his retirement in February, 1996.

Services will be held Friday, June 13, 2008, in the First United Methodist Church's sanctuary, 419 NE 1st Street, Gainesville, FL, at 10:00 A.M. followed by burial at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund or to Haven Hospice of North Central Florida, 4200 NW 90th Blvd. Gainesville, FL 32606.

Arrangements are under the care of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME, 404 NORTH MAIN STREET.
