The Obituary of Christiana Cornelius Blakely
The Alabama Baptist
September 25, 1884; Page 3, Column 4
Samford University Library, Birmingham, Alabama

It is with sorrow of heart that we record the death of our esteemed sister and friend, Christiana Blakely, wife of Wm. Blakely. She was born February 13, 1826, and died August 7, 1884. Her maiden name was Cornelius. She was married to William Blakely in Blount County, Ala., where they lived until a few years past, when they moved to Birmingham.
When I first knew her she was a member of the Methodist Church, but during a revival meeting held in the First Baptist Church of Birmingham, she with her husband and two grown up daughters, were received into the church and baptized by the writer, then pastor of that church. She continued a consistent member until the day of her death, showing by every act of her life that she was actuated by the Spirit of her Master, whom she served with great faithfulness. She was ready on all suitable occasions, to aid the poor and suffering, always anxious to visit the sick and minister to their wants. She was an exemplary member of the church, and worthy of the confidence of all who knew her. In her death the family has lost a wife and mother of no ordinary character. Her sickness was severe and much of her time was unconscious, hence we had no words of advise and counsel from her during her last illness. She leaves a family of three sons, all in Texas, and five daughters, all living in this County, two of whom are single and remain at home with their sorrowing father. May the God whom she loved be their God.
