Beverly Cornelius was the son of William and Lettice Cornelius. He was first married to Nancy Euphemia Smith, who was the mother of his children. He married second to Phoebe Moss. Both of his wives are believed to be buried next to him in unmarked graves. There are several graves around his that are only marked with field stones, including two very old children graves.

His family was known in early years as the "Ann" family, for most of his six daughters had some form of "Ann" in their name: Cincinatti (the oldest), Cynthia Ann, Saloma Ann, Louisiana, Christiana, and Phinetta Ann Cornelius. His sons were named Manley and Benton Beverly "B. B." Cornelius, both have served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
