John Jackson, vice president, director and general superintendent of Strawbridge & Clothie stores, died on Saturday at the Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia, after a short illness. He was 78.
Don of Halliday and Emily Hoopes Jackson, an old Quaker family dating back to the days of William Penn, Mr. Jackson one of the settlers of Lansdowne, lived at 101 Owen Ave., Lansdowne.
A native of Goshen, Chester County, Jackson was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Yearly Meeting of Friends. President of the Lansdowne Federal Savings and Loan Assoication since its organization he was a member of the Rotary Club, Union League, Aronomink Golf Club and past director of the Pennsylvania Retailers Association.
His brother, the late Dr. Edward Jackson, was a famed eye specialist, and at one time president of the Wills Eye Hospital.
Employed by Strawbridge & Clothier since 1885, Mr. Jackson served as secretary for a number of years prior to being named vice predident in 1943.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jennie E. Jackson, two children, Herbert W. Jackson, of Ardmore, and Mrs. Lawrence Shaffner, of Lansdowne; a brother, Halliday Jackson, of West Chester, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
