Martha's parents were Jesse Reid (1805-1849), and Clarissa Benton Reed (1800-1859). Martha was one of five children, one brother and three sisters.

She married William Clark Adair on March 6, 1856 in Tennessee. They had ten children, five sons and five daughters.

Their sons were: William W (1856-1927), Samuel Alexander (1855-1925), John Robert (1863-1942), Augustus C (1846-1949), and James T (1872-1905).
