Memorial services for Howard Clyde Allen, 70, Editor and Publisher of The Sundance Times, were held on Monday, February 10, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Sundance, Wyoming. The Rev. Scott Daniels, pastor of the Methodist Church and Pastor Nathan McNally of the First Baptist Church of Sundance officiated at the services.
Private family graveside services and interment with full military honors were held at 10:30 a.m. MOnday, February 10 in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, with members of the American Legion Post #45 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4311. Rev. Daniels and Pastor McNally officated at these services also.
Allen died at the Rapid City Regional Hospital on Tuesday, February 4, 1997 where he had been a patient since December 12, 1996.
A memorial has been established for the Sundance Senior Citizens Center Building Fund c/o the Sundance State Bank, Sundance, WY.
Howard C. Allen Jr. was born on October 2, 1926 at Newport, Vermont, the son of Howard Clyde and Almeda (Osgood) Allen, Sr. He grew up in Newport and graduated from Newport High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1945 to 1947 with the 309th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Group.
After receiving his honorable discharge, he attended New York City Univbersity and graduated in 1951. He moved to Sundance, WY where he was employed by John and Charlotte Lindsay at The Sundance Times until 1975.
He married Donna Ruth Herman on July 25, 1954 at Buffalo, WY.
From 1975 to 1985 he operated the newspaper for Allen and Alice Hermann. In 1985 Howard and his wife, Donna, purchased the newspaper and have owned and operated it since that time.
He was a member of the Sundance Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post #45, VFW Post #4311, and was a member of the board of directors of the Sundance Senior Citizens Center. He was an avid modeler of airplanes, trains and ships and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Allen, Sundance; two daughters: Jill and Scott Mackey, Sundance; and Melody and Richard Toth, Upton, WY; a son, James and Patty Allen, Powell, WY; his mother, Almeda Allen and a brother, Edward J. Allen, both of Newport, VT; 9 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Also surviving is his father-in-law, Marshall Herman, Sr., and brother-in-law Marshall Herman, Jr., both of Buffalo, WY.
He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Howard Clyde Allen III.
Fidler-Roberts Northeastern Wyoming Funeral Chapel of Sundance, WY was in charge of arrangements.
