Mr. Jones was born in Delhi, LA, and was a resident of Rayville, LA when he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1937. After training at Paris Island, S.C. and Quantico, VA, he was stationed at the Philadelphia Navy Shipyard, PA. From there he went overseas, and was serving with the Marine Detachment at the U. S. Embassy, Peking, China at the start of World War II. He, along with many of the other Marines stationed in China, were ultimately captured by the Japanese. He was a prisoner of war for more than three years, and endured tremendous hardships during that time. He weighed less than 100 lbs. when he was liberated in 1945. He and the others in his group became known as the North China Marines. A plaque with each North China Marine's name is on display at the Marine Embassy Security Guard School at Quantico, VA.
After World War II, he continued his career in the Marines, and at one point served with the Marine Detachment at the United Nations in the late 1940's. He also served in combat in the Korean War. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1957 at the rank of Master Sergeant. At the time of his retirement, he was one of the Senior Motor Transport Chiefs in the Marine Corps. In 1957 he moved his family to Crystal Springs and continued his federal services with the U. S. Postal Service from which he retired in 1975. He was a longtime member of Highland Baptist Church. Mr. Jones was a Christian and a patriot, and he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bonnie Lee Jones; his daughter Celeste MacLeod and son-in-law, Leonard MacLeod, his son Joel R. Jones and daughter-in-law Harriet L. Jones; grandchildren, Alycyn Herron, Shawn MacLeod, and Mollie Catherine Jones: and great-grandson Alex Herron.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the University Medical Center for the care given to Mr. Jones over the years. Special thanks are offered to Drs. Thomas Skelton, Mike McMullan, Kathy Gregg and Mark Meeks for helping us to enjoy many extra years with Mr. Jones. This would not have been possible without your care.
Memorials may be made to the Patrick Lehan Chair of Cardiovascular Research, in care of Public Affairs, UMMC, 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS, or to Highland Baptist Church, 505 N. Jackson Street, Crystal Springs, MS 39059.
