Muscogee County
Georgia, USA
Death: Aug. 24, 1903

Oklahoma, USA

George Wilcox was a Confederate Veteran who served as a musician during the war. After the war, he moved from Georgia to northeast Alabama. George Wilcox was Cherokee Indian from about two generations back. Harley Hood, who was George Wilcox's grandson, recalled as young boy of about 5 or 6 years old that he accompanied George Wilcox to the train that took him from Alabama to Oklahoma after his wife's death, where he spent his last years with his Cherokee relatives. It is not known who the Cherokee relatives in Oklahoma were. However, George Wilcox must have been a tough old man. A elderly neighbor recalled, "Pap Wilcox was a man of his word. And ye'd better be too, or he'd kill ye!"
Pap lived at Big Shanty, Georgia, a railroad town leading into Atlanta where Sherman stockpiled supplies during the Confederate War. An important battle was fought nearby--Kennesaw Mountain. The railroad which came through Big Shanty was the main railroad leading from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Atlanta. Both Union and Rebel troops fought to control it. Steele, also a railroad town in St. Clair County, Alabama, may have been the reason for Pap's move to Alabama. George's son and family are buried in the Steele City Cemetery.
