The son of Butler Williams (1799 – 1854) and Sarah G. Pouncey Williams (1809 – 1876) he fought in the Alabama 1st Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate Army in the Civil War along with his brother, Dr. Benjamin Franklin Williams. He married 8 Nov 1849 in Alabama to Rebecca J. Haden (1825 – 1876) and their children were Benjamin R. Williams (1850 – ), Sarah B. Williams (1852 – ), Samuel Butler Williams (1855 – 1941), Amanda L. Williams (1857 – ), Mary Williams (1860 – ), Joseph Luke Williams (1864 – 1936) and Charles Williams (1867 – 1874). The 1880 federal census shows him owning a store in Jefferson, Marion Co., Texas and married after Rebecca's death to a Sallie (1861 – ).
