Rites Wednesday for W E Savage

A large number of devoted friends and relatives assembled at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford M Savage at ten o'clock Wednesday morning to pay final tribute to Mr. Savage's father, William Edward Savage, prominent retired banker and church leader, who died at 11:20 o'clock Monday night of a heart attack. The sad rites were conducted by the Rev. R B Patterson of Corinth, former pastor of the Okolona Baptist Church of which Mr. Savage was a member. Burial was in the I O O F Cemetery with Barry Funeral Home in charge.

The pallbearers were William McRae of Aberdeen, R V King, J Merle Graham, R A Dean, J E Edens, J E McCain, Joe Jolly and N B Wilson.

Although in failing health for many years, Mr. Savage had been feeling much better for the past few days and on Sunday had said he wished it were possible for him to attend Sunday School and Church services. He had been in excellent spirits during the evening and enjoyed being with guests who were in the home. He passed away quietly as he was preparing to retire for the night. During the day Monday he had walked to his nearby home and spent some time before returning to his son's home where he spent the greater part of his time.

Mr. Savage, who would have been 82 in May, was a member of a prominent Okolona family, being the son of the late C M Savage, well known banker and civic leader, and the late Mrs. Adeline Madry Savage. Following the death of his father more than 30 years ago, he became the president of the Merchants and Farmers Bank and served in that capacity until he retired in 1929.

A devout Christian, a cultured gentleman and scholar, he was kind and considerate of all with whom he came in contact. He loved people and was especially fond of youth who always enjoyed visiting him and hearing his words of wisdom. He was loved and admired by all who knew him.

For many years he was an active deacon in the Okolona Baptist Church and a teacher in the Sunday School, until failing health made it impossible for him to attend regularly. He was also active in civic and social circles.

In 1892 he was married to Miss Maude Lynch of West Point, who died in April 1943. A devoted husband, during his wife's illness he never seemed to tire of trying to see that she was made comfortable and that her every wish was granted.

In addition to his son, Mr. Savage leaves two sisters, Mrs. C P Day and Mrs. T J Lyles; two granddaughters, Mrs. Roy D Byars Jr. of Jackson and Mrs. Charles Whetstone of Baton Rouge, La., and three great grandchildren, Georgia Ruth Byars and Roy DeWitt Byars III of Jackson and Susan Elizabeth Whetstone of Baton Rouge, all of whom were here for the services.
