Joseph was born November 2, 1850 [His marker shows 1849] in White county, Tennessee. His mother, Mary would have been about 15 at the time. Joseph is her oldest child and according to the family genealogy chart David Anderson is not his father. His death certificate , however gives David as his father. As an adult, Joseph always used the last name of Rickman, his mother's maiden name.
In 1874, Joe returns to Tennessee to marry Lucinda Paige. They are married October 26, 1874 in Warren county, Tennessee. They made their home in Kansas where Joe was a farmer and a stone mason. As a stone mason Joe helped build What is now called the Old mill in Newton and also helped in the building of the original building at Bethel College, in North Newton, along with other buildings in Newton.
Five children were born to this couple that we know of. The first three died young. Linnie died March 11, 1879, Estelle died April of 1879, and Alta died in 1881. Clarence was born in 1884 and Ocran was born in 1889. They lived to adulthood. Joe died in May 1918 and his wife Lucinda died in 1931. Joe, Lucinda, and all five children are buried in Greenwood cemetery. Joe should not be confused with his uncle, whose name is also Joe Rickman.
(I call the Uncle "Old Joe" as a way of telling them apart.)
