Civil War Brevet Brigadier General. A lawyer and clergyman before the Civil War, McConnell joined the Ohio 71st Infantry Regiment when it was formed in February of 1862. For the first two years, he led his regiment in Kentucky and central Tennessee. He participated in operations around Columbus, Shiloh, and Clarksville. The 71st was ordered to join Sherman's Army before the Atlanta Campaign. After participating in the seige of Atlanta, the 71st was shifted to the Nashville Campaign against Hood. McConnell participated in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. Toward the end of the war, he saw service in Huntsville, Alabama and Texas. On March 13, 1865, McConnell received the Brevet of Brigadier General "for gallant and meritorious services during the war." At the end of the war, he moved to Kansas, where he committed suicide on April 2, 1889.
