Arthur A. Bruce Jr., 81, passed away at 3:55 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2008, at St. John's Hospital in Joplin.
Mr. Bruce was born on Jan. 8, 1927, in Milford, Kan., he was the son of Arthur A Bruce Sr. and Nellie Irene Bruce.
He moved as a small child with his parents to a farm in the Ozarks, north of Mountain Grove, Mo. A graduate of Mountain Grove High School, he worked part time during his high school years in a local funeral home.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Medical Corp. Mr.
Bruce graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo., in 1947, and was a licensed embalmer and funeral director. He formerly owned funeral homes in Natchez, Miss., Lamar, Mo., and in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Prior to his retirement on May 1, 1990, he owned and operated the Ulmer Funeral Home in Carthage. Mr. Bruce purchased the Ulmer Funeral Home in May 1978, from Grace Ulmer Hill. On Sept. 28, 1986, they dedicated the addition of the new chapel that Mr. Bruce designed.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, of Carthage, where he served as a deacon and through the years, served on various committees and as chairman of both the Building Committee of the Family Life Center and the addition to the First Baptist Church Chapel.
He was active in the Carthage Chamber of Commerce, the Carthage Kiwanis Club and served on the Carthage Industrial Development Board. Mr. Bruce was also a member of Missouri Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
On Jan. 15, 1955, at the First Baptist Church, Little Rock, Ark., he was united in marriage to Mary Ann McDaniel. She survives. Also surviving is one son, Arthur A. Bruce III and his wife, Elizabeth Jan and their son, Eric, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Cooperman and her husband, Michael and their two sons, Aaron and Colin, of Franklin, Tenn., and Melissa Ann Bryan and her husband Emory and their four daughters, Rebecca, Kelly, Laura and Emily, of Tulsa,Okla.; one brother, Paul C. Bruce, Ballwin, Mo.; and two sisters, Dorothy Holbert, Ellisville, Mo., and Irene Hall, of Sullivan, Mo.
His parents, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 16, at the Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage. There will be open visitation. Contributions may be made to McCune Brooks Home Healthcare or St. John's Home Health in care of the Ulmer Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ulmer Funeral Home.
