LeRoy Henry Bisterfeldt age 89 passed away on July 15, 2007 at his home in Thornton, CO after a long illness. Immediate cremation, with inurnment at Locust Hill Cemetery, Rush Center, KS at a later date.
He was born December 2, 1917 in Russell County, Kansas on a farm near the Smokey Hill River, to Henry & Eva Ernst Bisterfeldt. A descendant of Germans from Russia wheat farmers who arrived in the United States in 1890. He was the second child of four. The family moved to Gering, NE in 1922 where LeRoy received his education and was introduced to the sugar beet industry. LeRoy left home at the age of 16 and rode the rails to California seeking a better life and to explore this great land. He returned to Kansas and trained as Golden Glove welterweight boxer for two seasons and was undefeated.
On June 12, 1938 he married Velma Virginia LOHREY at LaCrosse, KS.
With only an eight grade education LeRoy was an avid reader and excelled in the fields of engineering, chemistry, physics, mining, farming and metal smithing. He loved to tinker and invent a better way to do things. For many years he created candelabras, decorative ornaments and chests of nickel plated metal and brass which he gave generously to family and friends.
During World War II he worked in, construction at Hanford, WA Atomic Energy facility. LeRoy was self employed most of his adult life; he was a commercial realtor and owner of the Farm and Ranch Exchange, Aurora,CO. LeRoy was instrumental in the planning and development of the city of Thornton which was named after the Governor Dan Thornton. In 1959 LeRoy designed and distributed the commemorative coin "Rush to the Rockies" for the Denver centennial.
His first wife Velma died April 8, 1991 in Thornton, CO. On January 9, 1992 he married Sarah Wyscaver Edwards in Northglenn, CO. Years after retiring he began the hobby of wine making ensuring his friends and family were adequately supplied.
He is survived by his wife Sarah and her two sons Doyle of Castle Rock, CO & Wilbur of British Columbia, two sisters Esther Elma Wills of Gering, NE, Helen Irene Hearing of Spokane Valley, WA, nieces Deborah Toth, Spokane, WA, Gaye Tosta, Grand Junction, CO, Joanie Jones Hearing, Livermore, CA. nephews, Tom Bisterfeldt of Spokane, WA, Wade Bisterfeldt, of Boise ID, Dwane Wills, Overland Park, KS, Carroll Wills, Golden, CO, Royce Wills, Lamar, CO, Dr. Daryl Wills, Gering, NE.
