He married Helen V. DeFrees on April 24, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pontiac, Illinois. She survives.

Also surviving are 28 grandchildren, Brian, Colleen, Patrick, Casey and Sean McCaskey; Eric, Phillip and Kathleen Keeneth; Matt and Leah Allen; Sarah Zwahr; Andy, Christopher, Joe and Rachel Mies; Stephen Hejducek; Jacob and Jared Abry; Dustin and Cole Gerdes; Valerie, Claire and Daniel Roarty; Audrey and Mary Alice Neville; Morgan and Jimmy Abry; and Grace Ann Abry; and four great-grandchildren, Katlynn Allen; and Logan, Mackenzi and Camryn Mies.

One son, Andrew Michael Abry; one granddaughter, Alane Abry; and one sister, Mary Abry, preceded him in death.

He had been a farmer in Nevada Township until 1985 and had been rural mail carrier for Odell.

He served as a volunteer at St. Paul School; member of American legion Odell Post 666; VFW Dwight Post 2608; lifetime member of the Moose; director and past president of the Odell Apartments; St. Paul Alumni past president; former member of the NFO and Farmers Union; Knights of Columbus Council 815, Odell; he had been a past grand knight; NRLCA; Fifth Armored Division Association; the NRA; St. Paul School Board; and St. Paul Family Society.
