NEW CASTLE — Lester "Jake" Maddox, 85, New Castle, died unexpectedly May 4, 2008, at Willis-Knighton Health Center in Caddo County, Shreveport, La., following his declining health.
He was born April 18, 1923, in Linwood, Ind., Madison County, Indiana. The son of William N. Maddox and Lanti Lee Planck Maddox, and resided in the New Castle area for most of his lifetime.
Jake was a graduate of Alexandria High School Class of 1941. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943 and flew transport planes in the Bougainville Island area in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged with rank of Corporal in 1946. Jake was a supervision millwright for Guide Lamp formerly of Anderson, retiring in 1975 after 35 years of employment. He was a well-known farmer in the Henry County area and also ran an agricultural lime business.
He was a former Cub Scout baseball coach in the Cadiz area and a member and past president of the Cadiz Lions Club. He was a founder and chief of the Hot Wells, La., Fire Department. He founded, developed and owned Holly Point Trailer Park in Louisiana for the past 27 years. He was a lover of the outdoors, an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. To Linda and John, Jake was a wonderful dad and father. His warm outgoing sense of humor will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by family and friends alike.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda J. Winter of New Castle; son, John (Ginger) Maddox of Brownsville; five grandchildren, Jim Norfleet of Middletown, Cari (Ron) Romine of Speedway, Jodi (Trent) Hitchens of New Castle, and Cindy (Mike) Ballinger and Laura (Chad) Friend, all of Connersville; 10 great-grandchildren, Zachry Dilk, Brooklyn Hitchens, Ashton Baker, Kyra Baker, Aaron Ballinger, Ben Ballinger, Lauren Friend, Brenna Friend, Kaden Friend and Gracie Friend; three sisters, Vida Mae Tharp of Richmond, and Ruby Kaska and Dollie Leach, both of Alexandria; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Barbara Ruth Knuckles Maddox, on June 8, 1970; his second wife, "Dot" Thompson Maddox, on Nov. 5, 2005; and two brothers, William Ogden Maddox and Noel Maddox.
Services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with Pastor Bob Pavey of Mount Zion Wesleyan Church, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.
