He enlisted in the Army on January 6, 1942 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a Machine shop and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #43-38265 took off, with a crew of 9, from Station 156, England on a bombing mission over Kassel, Germany. They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire and crashed near Muenchenhof, Germany during the war. The entire crew was lost on this crash.

William was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

At the families request his state of birth (Kentucky) was added to his headstone instead of his state of residence (Michigan) as was normally done.
