He was elected Sheriff of Culpeper County in the election of 1939. Sheriff Wayland won the election by 43 votes in a 4-man contest and continued to serve until his retirement in 1956. Sheriff Wayland faced no opposition in 1943, which was in the middle of World War II. He will probably be best remembered as the Sheriff without a gun, because he never carried a firearm during his entire tenure as Sheriff.
