Mary Madeline "Madge" Shanks, age 74, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at home surrounded by her loving family, following a brief illness.
Madge was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Feb. 12, 1934, to Frank and Blanche Frey.
The family moved to Carthage in 1940, where they would remain life long residents.
Madge graduated from Carthage High School in 1951. After graduation she moved to Kansas City, where she would meet and marry Raymond Shanks on Jan. 27, 1954.
After traveling the world with the United States Army they retired to Carthage. Madge worked for Jaffe Shoes, Belk Simpson and Wal-Mart. She retired from Wal-Mart in 1985. Madge was a volunteer tutor for the Literacy Council, an enthusiastic supporter of Carthage baseball and a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Post 2590.
She loved line dancing, keno and bingo. She is survived by her husband, Raymond; three daughters, Dede and Rusty Melton, of Carthage, Debbie and Jim Chittenden, of Ames, Iowa, and Donna and John Thomas, of Orange, Texas; two sons, Dale Shanks, of Carthage, and David Shanks, of Jerico Springs; three surrogate daughters, Angie Harwell, Linda Hammond and Ella McCoy; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Angel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Barbra Jean Frey; one son, Dennis Shanks; one grandson, Dustin Alton; and two great-granddaughters, Adriana and Mazie Shanks.
Mom left us with the greatest example of class and courage. We hope we will always maker her proud.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Park Cemetery in Carthage.
