Her father when a small boy was sent with the clothes for his brother Tillman, who was serving with Gen. Washington. The General was so impressed by this small boy that he made him his messenger.

She was educated in a seminary at Marion, Ala., and at a French school in Mobile, Ala. Justina is buried in the family cemetery at her ancestral home, Strawberry Hill plantation, at Forkland, 12 miles south of Eutaw, AL.
