Michael Duane Smithson, 55, died of cardiac-related problems May 11, 1996, at Columbia Alaska Regional Hospital. A memorial service was at Turnagain Church of Christ, followed by a potluck. Mr. Smithson's ashes were then scattered at Bird Creek.

Mr. Smithson was born March 28, 1941, in Stockton, Calif., and grew up in Waco, Texas. He graduated from University High School in Waco in 1959 and Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock, Texas, in 1977. He had attended Abilene Christian University, majoring in agriculture and animal husbandry, from 1959 to 1961. Mr. Smithson had resided in Anchorage since 1989. He worked for Ace Delivery Services from 1989 to 1991 and Bob's Pawn Shop from 1991 to 1993. He also held many other jobs, including truck driver, salesman and minister. Mr. Smithson had been self-employed as a sales representative for various travel magazines. He was a member of Turnagain Church of Christ and enjoyed camping, fishing, poker and spectator sports. The family said: ''Michael is loved by many friends and family. He made an impact on everyone who knows him. His neighbors, church, family, business associates, and most assuredly family will miss him. He has friends of all ages, from one year to 88 years, and he treated them all the same.'' Mr. Smithson was preceded in death by his parents, C.H. ''Smitty'' and Bernice ''Bernie.''

He is survived by his wife, Colette Smithson of Anchorage; daughters, Micah Smithson of Biloxi, Miss., and Joyce Patena of Waco; sons, Patrick Smithson and Arron Smithson of Waco; brother, Pat Smithson of Waco; sister, Claudia Hammond of Davis, Calif.; aunt, Christine Ryason of Waco; three grandchildren; one niece; and two nephews. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
