Francis Marion Temple was born on August 4, 1850, in rural Crawford Country, PA. He was the son of Reuben Smith Temple and Jane W. Dunham Temple.
Francis was married to Cynthia F. Yeager on June 6, 1876, in Mercer, PA. They had four children:
Grace Marion Temple (1879-1919)
Herbert Flake Temple (1883-1947)
George Francis Temple (1888-1980)
Francis Marion Temple Jr. (1893-1969)
As a rural doctor, Francis was perhaps too devoted to his patients. After years of working long hours and making house calls in bad weather, he died of pneumonia on June 17, 1896, when he was only 45. After his death, Cynthia relocated the family to California. Francis's son, George Temple, was the father of child star Shirley Temple (1928-2014).
