The 10th child of Peter and Anna Barbara born in Mason County only 2-3 weeks after family had moved from Petersburg. He grew up on the farm and married Katherine Shock in 1863. In 1877 John Henry and Katherine took 7 children from Illinois to Texas in search of a warmer climate. They resided in Dallas County for 5 yrs then moved to Milford Ellis County Texas. They lived at the old A.H. Files farm for 1 yr. In 1883, the settled in the eastern part of Hill county near the Ellis county line. Here they acquired approx 300 acres and lived for 28 yrs. When the railroad came through, a branch was established in his honor but the railroad misspelled his name and has forever been known as the Hammel Branch.
Katherine passed away suddenly of heart failure Sunday morning 11-12-1905. Adam Peter and John Henry were the only sons of Peter and Anna to live to adulthood to have families. They both spoke German fluently. John Henry and Katherine had 9 children
