He earned a prestigious scholarship to University College School in Hampstead, London, where he honed his musical skills in preparation for a promising career in the field. Serving with distinction in the British Army's 3rd Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, he quickly rose to the rank of Lieutenant in 1954.
