After lying for several days at the point of death, Hon John Beckley died at his residence in this city shortly after five o'clock on Wednesday morning, as the immediate result of an attack of pneumonia from which there was little hope expressed by his friends of his recovery from the time of his seizure, owing to his advanced age and enfeebled condition.
Mr Beckley was born near Pittsburg, Pa, on March 26, 1833, and his 77th birthday was celebrated here but a few weeks since when the ladies of the Rebekah lodge of Odd Fellows tendered him a supper in the Odd Fellows' Hall. He was a son of Gen Alfred Beckley, who attained distinction during the civil war and a grandson of John Beckley, clerk of the first congress of the United States, under the administration of George Washington.
With his parents, Mr Beckley came to Raleigh, then included in Fayette, in 1837, locating at Wildwood, afterward removing to what is now the city of Beckley, but in which the log cabin of the Beckley family was the second dwelling to be erected.
Mr Beckley was married in 1855 to Miss Margaret J Price, of Greenbrier County, who survives him with one daughter, Mrs Bettie D Campbell, of the five children born to the union. J Price Beckley, his son and partner, was killed by a stroke of lightning during the tornado which swept over this section about ten years ago.
For a number of years Mr Beckley served the county as circuit and county clerk, and as county commissioner, and most of the earlier records of the county are in his handwriting. After his retirement from office he engaged in the mercantile business, which he conducted up to the time of his last illness.
He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, a Master Mason, and Past Grand Master of the Odd Fellows of this state, and a member of the committee in charge of the building of the Odd Fellows Home at Elkins, a work in which he took a personal interest, the paramount desire of his later days being permitted to live long enough to see the institution completed and successfully launched in the work of carrying out its mission.
For many years he was an active, earnest and faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church, the congregation of which in this, his home city, had been both spiritually and materially helped through his influence and example through the long years of his connection with it.
The funeral services which will be held this afternoon at half past two o'clock, will be under the auspices of New River lodge, I O O F, and the religious exercises will be conducted by Rev Wm Fallen, pastor of the M E Church, the interment being in Wildwood cemetery.
