OLDEST HIGHLAND MAN DIED THURSDAY MORNING
Christian Baumann, the oldest resident of Highland, and the father of Robert J. and C.P. Baumann of this city, died at St. Joseph Hospital at 8 o'clock Thursday morning, his death being due to the weakness incident to his very advanced age of 96 years, 4 months and 20 days. Throughout his long life he had enjoyed good health and had never had any serious spells of sickness, only the weakness and helplessness that came to him in his last years.
The funeral services were held at the Congregational Church at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, Rev. C.E. Miche of the Evangelical Church officiating, and interment was made in the City cemetery.
The deceased was born in Judendorf (sic - Uetendorf), Canton Bern, Switzerland, on Dec 1, 1824. He grew to manhood in the land of his nativity, and immigrated to the United States in the summer of 1852 and located on a farm four miles east of Highland. The remainder of his long life had been spent in this community.
In August 1854, he was united in marriage to Ms Anna Gurtner, the marriage ceremony being performed in Highland. Four sons and one daughter were born to their union, one son and one daughter having preceded him in death. The wife died Feb 22, 1899. In immediate relatives he is survived by three sons, Robert and C.P. Baumann of Highland and Fred W. Baumann of Hagarstown. He also leaves an unusually large number of lineal descendents, 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In his young manhood while in Switzerland, Mr. Baumann for a time herded sheep in the Alps mountain region. Later was employed as a shoe-maker. He took an active part in the religious war that agitated that country in 1842.
After arriving in this country his first occupation was that of a farm hand at $4 per month, which he followed until he launched into farming for himself. He also followed threshing for a time.
Mr. Baumann revisited his native Switzerland in 1863 and returned the next year with two companions.
The deceased was a capable and prosperous farmer during the years of his strength, and enjoyed the respect esteem of all acquaintances. After the death of his wife in 1899 he made his home with his son, C.P. Baumann, where he was gently cared for during his declining years, especially so by the late Mrs. C.P. Baumann, whose kindly care toward the aged man was remarkable and no doubt brought much of pleasure to his last years. After her death his old age and feebleness required such constant attenties (sic) that he was taken to St. Joseph Hospital where the good sisters cared for him until the end came.
The funeral service was attended by an immense concurrence of the relatives and friends, paying their last tribute of respect to the long and useful life of the deceased.
