MOJAVE — R. H. "Cotton" Farmer enjoyed over a century of life here on earth. On March 27, at the age of 102 he left earth and rejoined his wife Vinnie, who passed away in 1992, and son Bill, who passed in 2001.
Cotton was born on Oct 21, 1905, in Indian territory near Elk City, Oklahoma, and lived there and in Red Rock, Oklahoma, until his adult years when he married Vinnie Beatty (1904-1992).
After trying his hand at farming, he decided to become a steam-fitter, working in Los Angeles, New Mexico, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Nebraska building new industry. In 1955, they moved to Mojave. He worked at Edwards Air Force Base and the Borax Plant, as well as other places around the area, but they never left the desert "that keeps him healthy."
Cotton was an active member of the Scottish Rite of Bakersfield and of the Masonic Lodge in Barstow and is a Hiram award recipient. The Masons will perform the funeral service on Friday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at Stickel Mortuary Chapel.
Cotton is survived by his sister Opal Schell of Coffeyville, Kansas; daughter Betty Stone, five grandchildren: Janet Perry, Cynthia Brown, Joe Farmer, Linda Hall, and Julie Gillum; eight great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
