In 1860, George H. Rinehart was a blacksmith living in Monroe Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, August 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service that day in Harrisburg with Co. F, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry, at the rank of private. Honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863. He also enlisted in Monroe Township, Cumberland County, February 1, 1864, and mustered into federal service the same day in Harrisburg with Co. A, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), at the rank of private. In June 1865, he transferred to Co. A, 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry during a war-end consolidation and was honorably discharged with his company on July 13, 1865.
