Birth: Sep. 26, 1832
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Oct. 4, 1909
Doa Ana County
New Mexico, USA

John was the son of John & Emily Duncan Barncastle. John's father immigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia. John Duncan led an amazing life on the frontier. His parents moved the family from Philadelphia to IL by 1850. He moved to CA in 1860, enlisted as Sgt in the 5th CA Infantry, fought many battles in New Mexico. His company stayed in NM to protect travelers from Indian attacks and build roads and infrastructure. John's advertisements for Dona Ana, General Merchandise, appear in the Southwestern Business Directory and in R. L. Polk's Directory. By 1870 he had the general store, a flour mill, and a profitable farm. His vineyards were renowned as the finest in the territory. Also, he planted pecan trees and pomegranite trees, and experimented growing tea. Adjacent to his farm he rented land to Fort Selden soldiers to grow gardens, as there was no good land on their property.

He married Josefa Melendra, aka Josephine, the daughter of Pablo Meledra, founder of Dona Ana. John entered politics, was the victim of bandits in 1884 as found in the Frontier Times Journal article about a stagecoach robbery.

John, Josefa, grand son Patrick and wife Francisca Wertheim are all buried here.
