Lucy "Mae" Wells Darnell
June 19, 1957 — June 21, 2023
Blythe, GA
Lucy "Mae" Wells Darnell, 66, loving wife of 50+ years to Amos "Gary" Darnell, entered into her eternal rest early Wednesday morning, June 21, 2023 at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Services to celebrate her life will be held in the James Funeral Home Chapel at 4:00PM Saturday afternoon, June 24, 2023, with the Reverend John Bartlett officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00PM Saturday afternoon, June 24, 2023 at James Funeral Home prior to the service.

One of nine children born to the late Leila Olivia Reese Wells Parker and the late Melvin Joe Wells, Mae was a lifelong resident of the Keysville/Blythe area. On Halloween night, October 31, 1971, she met the love of her life and, after a whirlwind romance, got married on September 1, 1972. As a wife and mother, it was important to her that their home be a loving, safe-haven. An excellent cook, she enjoyed having family dinners and get-togethers. A hard worker, Mae was a sales associate for K-Mart for 20+ years and then for Staples for 18+ years. When not working, she enjoyed fishing and camping. She has been described as being strong-willed and straight-forward with no filter but also being generous, selfless and always there for others in their time of need. Mae had a big heart—she "loved big and loved hard". Her greatest treasure was her family who brought her much joy, especially the grandchildren and great grandson, and was looking forward to lavishing much love to her soon-to-be great grandson. Her passing has left a void that nothing and no one can fill, and her memories will be cherished and live on in our hearts.

Mae is also preceded in death by her three siblings, Barbara Prickett, Carl Wells and Cindy Wells. Others left to cherish her memories include her children, Faye Darnell and Kenneth Darnell; three grandchildren, Amber Robertson (Vince), Katelyn Penrow and Alex Darnell; great grandsons, Dale Robertson and Baby Boy Robertson; five siblings, Brenda Monroe (James), Judy Liccardi (Ron), Marie Hardin (David), Melvin "Poochie" Wells and Lamar Wells; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

Legacy of Love
A wife, a mother, a grandma too,
This is legacy we have from you.
You taught us love and how to fight;
You gave us strength, you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another
Not just as a wife, but as a mother.
For all of us, you gave your best;
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So, go in peace, you've earn your sleep,
Your love in our hearts, we'll eternally keep.

Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard, but always near;
Still loved, still missed and very dear.
Passed away at 12:30am. A wonderful and sweet person. Always there when you needed her.

My sister-in-law.
