Florence was born in Philadelphia and was raised in the Manayunk section of the city and graduated in 1939 from Roxborough High School. She was a bookkeeper and assistant office supervisor for the Metropolitan Insurance Company in Media for 25 years. Following her retirement, she worked for Response Systems in Edgemont for 10 years and part-time for the Toppitzer Funeral Home until a few short years ago. She was a member of the Newtown Square Presbyterian Church and the Manayunk Presbyterian Church [First Presbyterian of Manayunk, Ed.]. She had been active in the Sunday school and youth programs for her church, and volunteered for the USO during World War II and as a Girl Scout leader in the 1940's. She was an avid bridge player; enjoyed gardening, and made beautiful Irish knit sweaters for family and friends. She was a seamstress, and assisted Senior Citizens with their tax returns through the AARP and Senior Centers. She was an accomplished artist working with oil paints, acrylics and pastels. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed traveling, especially to Ireland.
She is survived by her daughter Kathleen C (Robert) Jones of Morton; two granddaughters, Maureen E and Caitlin A Jones; three sisters, Esther McMullen of Philadelphia, Ida Gilbert of Cartersville, Ga. and Ruth Shannon of Stone Mountain, Ga. Her husband, John Carmody predeceased her in 1987.
