My paternal grandmother, Blanche Baker Phillips, was born on January 13, 1887, in Audubon County, Iowa, and grew up in Guthrie County, graduating from high school in Guthrie Center. She attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, graduating in 1909.

She and my grandfather, Victor Aubrey Phillips, were at Cornell College at the same time, but they did not meet until they both had moved to Colorado - Vic to farm near Eckert in Delta County, and Blanche to live with an aunt and teach school in Palisade in Mesa County. Since Vic also had relatives in Palisade, they soon met and fell in love. They were married in Palisade in 1913, after which they moved to his fruit farm, where they began their family. In 1919, they moved to town - Cedaredge, Colorado, and this is where my father and his brothers grew to adulthood.

My grandmother raised three sons - Richard, Roger ("Ole"), and Robert - and taught school (Algebra, Geometry, German and Latin) in Cedaredge. The commencement program in 1921 lists her as the principal of Cedaredge High School.

After she retired from teaching, she served as the Town Clerk for the Town of Cedaredge for many years.

My grandfather died in 1950. While Grandma mourned him deeply, she lived for another twenty-six years without him, joining him at last on March 27, 1976.
