Buist was a Civil war veteran who was a member of the German Artillery of the Hampton Legion. He was the surgeon of the unit and tended to Lieutenant Rudolph Siegling at the second Battle of Manassas. While attending to Siegling's wounds an exploding shell covered both of them with dirt. Siegling was thought to have been mortally wounded from his a previous shell and was initially reported dead.
