The following was added by John Schneider:

Buist was a Civil war veteran who was a member of the German Artillery of the Hampton Legion. He was the surgeon of the unit and tended to Lieutenant Rudolph Siegling at the second Battle of Manassas. While attending to Siegling's wounds an exploding shell covered both of them with dirt. Siegling was thought to have been mortally wounded from his a previous shell and was initially reported dead. He received a stomach wound and it was felt he would not survive the night, but did and participated in the battle the following day even though he was in serious condition.

Surgeon in Confederate States Army, and Army of Northern Virginia; also in Roper Hospital, and in United States Marine Hospital. President of Medical Society of South Carolina. Member of Board of Health of City of Charleston. Professor of Principles and Science of Surgery in Medical College of South Carolina. Commissioner of Charleston Orphan House. Director in Consolidate Company of Charleston, and one of the promoters in opening up the Isle of Palms. Honorary member of the Supreme Council of the Medical College of South Carolina. Married Miss Margaret Sinclair Johnston, February 1867. Is a Thirty-third Degree Mason.
