Eleanor Strong, dau. of Joseph Strong, Esq. and Sarah Allen, b. of record July 16, 1713 at Northampton, Mass., but named "Eliza" in the Northampton birth record.[*1] She d. of record June 13, 1796 at Windham. Conn. and is interred at adjoining Mansfield, Conn. (g.s., Æ 83.)

On Jan. 24, 1736/7 of record at Coventry, Conn. (recorded as Jan. 25, 1746/7 in the Windham, Conn. vital records), Eleanor m. Stephen Fitch, s. of Capt. Jeremiah Fitch and Ruth Gifford, b. in or after February 1711/12 at Coventry, Conn. He died at Windham, Conn. during the month of February 1806. Although his death is recorded as Feb. 9, 1806, Æ 94, in the Windham, Conn. 1st Church records, his death was also reported in a Feb. 6, 1806 issue of a Connecticut newspaper [re: Hale, Conn. Newspaper Death Notices.] Assuming he died in the month of February, his stated age in the Windham church record of "Æ 94" means he was then 93 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 94, indicating he was born in or after the month of February 1711-12, as such date is historically written in the Gregorian calendar.

Eleanor Strong and Stephen Fitch had four known children who are outlined in their father's memorial. Notwithstanding the near 13 year recorded gap between the births of the first two children, the claim there were three additional children is not supported by known vital or church baptism records.

[*1] Eight children of Joseph and Sarah (Allen) Strong are of record at Northampton, Mass. The last recorded child is called Eliza, b. July 16, 1713. Either this name was erroneously entered in the original town record as Eliza, misconstrued as Eliza, or her parents later changed it to Eleanor in modern spelling. At the record of her marriage in the Coventry records she is called "Elenor"; "Elener" in the re-recording of her marriage in the Windham records; "Elener" in the births of her children and at her recorded death; but "Eleanor" in two records of the Windham First Church. It is possible the original name in the birth record was intended to be "Elena" misinterpreted or miswritten as "Eliza." Her gravestone inscription [d. June 13, 1796, "in the 83 Year of her Age"] means she was then 82 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of her Age) 83, indicating she was born after June 13, 1713, further complementing her birth record at Northampton. Her parents did not relocate from Northampton, Mass. to Coventry, Conn. until 1716.
