Hiram's father - Joel Chapman Higbee - and his mother - Jerusha Lockwood Higbee - both died in Decatur County Iowa, 1858 and 1876 respectively.

His siblings were:

Hiram was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted September 18, 1862 with the Iowa Southern Border Brigade, 3rd Battalion, Company A.

Hiram went with his parents to Decatur County, Iowa in 1857. After the war he lived in Decatur County, Iowa, and was a successful farmer.
Sometime between 1880 and 1900 he moved back to Vermont.
