Francis D. Capone Sr., 81, of Palatka died Monday, February 17, 2003 at the Crestwood Nursing Home in Palatka following an extended illness.
He was a native of West Haven, Conn., and had been a resident of Palatka for the past 38 years, coming from West Haven. He was a U.S. veteran of World War II. He was a founder and former President of the West Haven, Conn. Italian-American Club.
He worked as a brick mason for Park Manor Builders of Palatka for 21 years and had laid the brick for many homes in Palatka and also for the building which currently houses The Palatka Daily News. He was a former Manager of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #3349 in Palatka.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Capone; one son, Christopher Capone; one brother, James "Sonny" Capone; and one sister, Louise Dorothy Franco.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, La Verne Capone, Palatka; three sisters, Olivia Jefts, Interlachen; Louise D'Amato, Pembroke Pines, Fla.; and Mary Lewis, Smart; one son, Francis Daniel Capone Jr., West Haven, Conn.; one brother, Carmine Daniel Capone, West Haven, Conn; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial gifts may be sent to Hospice of the Lakes, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at the Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with the Rev. Frank Chilton officiating.
In honor and memory of Mr. Capone a video tribute will be shown during the service.
Burial with military honors bestowed by the U.S. Navy will be in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Green Cove Springs.
