"Mr. Buckalew retired as a supervisor with Columbia Gas of Maryland, where he was employed for 35 years. He was a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant and veteran of World War II. Phil served in France, Belgium and Germany, and, on his way home from the war on the U.S.S. Francis Slanger, was shipwrecked in the Atlantic Ocean for 30 days. When Phil was in grade school, he managed the family diary farm for his grandfather. Phil was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church and the National Rifle Association. He graduated from the old Beall High School and Catherman's Business School. Mr. Buckalew was an avid hunter and outdoorsman for over 80 years, spending most of his free time hunting on Dan's Mountain and fishing along Savage River."

Jay, of LaVale, and Alta Rebecca (Buckalew) Symons and husband Charles, of Frostburg; three sons, John Buckalew Jr. and wife Pamela, of Ridgeley, W.Va., Dr. David Buckalew and wife Robin, of Rice, Va., and Steven A. Buckalew, of the V.A. Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Juliet (Blank) Godlove and husband Matthew, of South Riding, Va., and Skye Alta Symons, of Frostburg; one sister, Doris (Buckalew) Layman, of Wrights Crossing.
